Prof. Mariko Kawano has been with Waseda University, Faculty of Law since 2004. She has been a Member of the Ocean Policy Council, Headquarters for Ocean Policy since 2012 and is the Chairperson of the Project Team for the Examination of the Legal System for the Management of the EEZ of Japan.
She was the assistant to Ambassador Chusei Yamada when he was the arbitrator nominated by Japan in the Southern Bluefin Tuna cases. She also assisted Ambassador Yamada in his works for the International Law Commission, including Jurisdictional Immunities of States, State Responsibility, and Shared Natural Resources.Her research has led to her participation in various diplomatic conferences and other intergovernmental meetings, including the Diplomatic Conference on the Convention on the Jurisdictional Immunities of States and Their Property, the 2nd ARF Seminar on UNCLOS, and the Future of Security in the Asia-Pacific: Emerging Challenges, Promoting Conflict Management and Enhancing Cooperation in Maritime Affairs. She also lectured in the summer course on public international law in the Hague Academy in 2009 and the United Nations Regional Course in International Law in 2012.
She is currently a member of various governmental committees of Japan, including the Consultative Committee on Maritime Affairs, Ministry of Land and Transport (2007-), the Advisory Group on the Oceanic and Environmental Policy (2013-), the Advisory Group on the Enhancement of the Technologies for the Effective Use of Remote Islands (2014-) andthe Advisory Group on the Ocean Policy and Ports (2014-).
