Dr. Iris Kirchner-Freis is Co-Director of the Institute for the Law of the Sea and International Marine Environmental Law (ISRIM) in Bremen, Germany. Since 2009 she is a lecturer at Bremen University, Germany and a guest lecturer at the Jacobs University Bremen and at the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven, Germany, in the programmes „Maritime Technologies” and „Integrated Safety and Security Management”.
She is the managing director of MLS Legal, a law firm specialised i.a. in intellectual property law, in Bremen and Berlin, Germany. After having completed her LL.M.Eur. in Saarbrucken, Germany (1997) she was a legal counsel and lawyer in the United Kingdom, France and Denmark. In 2011 she completed her PhD in Saarbrucken, Germany. Since 2010, her research has a specific focus on legal aspects of marine biotechnology as well as the patentability of genetic resources.
