Prof. Dr. Andree Kirchner is Director of the non-profit ISRIM-MLS gGmbH – Institute for the Law of the Sea and International Marine Environmental Law (ISRIM) in Bremen, Germany. Since 2007 he is a professor of international law at the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven, Germany. He is also the Adviser on international legal affairs at MLS Legal, a law firm specialised i.a. in intellectual property law, in Bremen and Berlin, Germany. After having completed his LL.M. in Stockholm, Sweden (1996) and his PhD in Hamburg, Germany (2001) he was an adviser in international law to the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF), with a special focus on marine protected areas, which led to his participation in various diplomatic conferences and other intergovernmental meetings, e.g. at the United Nations, at OSPAR and HELCOM as well as at the European Union. Since 2010, his research has a specific focus on legal aspects of marine biotechnology, including the patentability of genetic resources as well as deep sea-bed mining.
